Everything you need to know before stepping onto the mats at 1447 Mayport Road, Units 1, 2, and 3 in Atlantic Beach.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art and combat sport focused on grappling and ground control. It emphasizes technique, timing, and leverage so a smaller person can defend themselves against a larger opponent through positional control, sweeps, joint locks, and chokes.
No. Jiu-Jitsu is how you get in shape. People of all fitness levels start as complete beginners. You build cardio, strength, flexibility, and balance at your own pace, and our Monday and Wednesday Fundamentals classes are structured specifically to ease new students onto the mat.
For your first trial class, a uniform is not required. Wear comfortable athletic clothes such as a fitted t-shirt or rashguard and shorts or leggings without zippers or pockets. If you need to borrow a gi for your first session, let us know when you arrive.
Yes. Because most real-world altercations end up clinched or on the ground, Jiu-Jitsu teaches you how to stay calm under pressure, manage distance, escape bad positions, and control an aggressor without relying on size or striking.
Absolutely. Because Jiu-Jitsu relies on leverage and technique rather than brute force, it is a high-leverage skill set for women and an ideal developmental outlet for children starting at age 5. Kids build focus, body awareness, discipline, and confidence in a supervised room.
Stay clean: shower, trim fingernails and toenails, and wash your gi and rashguard after every session. Respect everyone from fellow white belts to black belts. Tap early and often so both partners stay safe. Listen to your coaches, slap-and-bump before rolling, and leave ego at the door.
Memberships are month-to-month with no contracts and no initiation fees. Adults are $160 per month for unlimited classes and open mats; Kids and Homeschool programs are $140 per month (or add Homeschool to a Kids plan for $75 per month). You can freeze or cancel anytime by emailing mentalitymartialarts@gmail.com.
